DIGITALIZATION IN THE SERVICE OF NATIONAL MEMORY

Ana Voštinić, Marijana Jakšić and Ivana Hrenko

Abstract
The topic of this paper is creation of the digital archives where one of the most tragic events in Kraljevo history during World War II is presented and which consequences extend way beyond local character, becoming an integral part of the national history. It is about mass shooting of civilians from Kraljevo by the German Army, which is known as '14th October'.
Intention is to present this tragic event from the viewpoint of the librarian by collecting all of the material on this matter so far (stored in or published by libraries, museums, archives…) to one place, implementing in this way the basic principles of digitalization – availability of the information that can be easily searched and found for all the users, regardless of space or time constraints.

DIGITAL LEGACY OF MIHAILO PETROVIĆ ALAS

Mirjana Maljković, Biljana Stojanović and Žarko Mijajlović

Abstract
In this paper we present the website Digital legacy of Mihailo Petrović Alas (1868-1943), the most distinguished Serbian mathematician, the founder of the so called Serbian mathematical school and the former professor at the University of Belgrade. This site is an extension of the project Digital legacies of the Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade, http://legati.matf.bg.ac.rs. The aim of this project is to collect, digitize and present to the general audience the life and work of the prominent Serbian mathematicians.

DIGITIZATION OF BULGARIAN NATURAL SCIENCE SCHOOL BOOKS PUBLISHED IN BELGRADE DURING THE PERIOD OF NATIONAL REVIVAL (1806-1878)

Velislava Stoykova

Abstract
The school books used for teaching natural sciences like mathematics, physics, etc. during the period of Bulgarian National Revival were not very well studied and analysed with respect to their concepts content and to their overall relations to educational system. Recently, a great number of that books is offered in digitized format from several sources which present a structured digitized archive. The paper offers a survey and analysis of Bulgarian natural science school books published in Belgrade during the period of Revival (1806-1878) from digital collection which includes several linked sources. The structure of meta-data scheme of encoding and linking of data which support evaluation of study content and related analysis are presented. The study of three natural science school books published in Belgrade in Bulgarian language during the period of Revival is presented by using their digital copies. The results of that analysis show inconsistency between mathematical concepts and the use of their subsequent terms. Finally, the conclusion about the multi-disciplinary structure of curricula and related subjects studied in natural science school education during period of Revival is presented.

DIGITIZATION OF THE BOOK "PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS" OF VUK MARINKOVIĆ

Žarko Mijajlović and Nadežda Pejović

Abstract
In this paper we present digitization of a book "Priciples of physics" ("Начела физике", Belgrade, 1851) written by Vuk Marinković, a prominent Serbian medical doctor and physicist from the middle of the XIX century. This relatively large book is considered as a first Serbian text-book on physics. It is interesting that it was one of the last books published in the old-Serbian language and script. Later text-books were written in modern Serbian in accordance with Vuk Karadžić's reform. The printed copy of this book belongs to the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It's digital copy is deposited in the Virtual Library of the Faculty of mathematics, elibrary.matf.bg.ac.rs.

DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING AMONG INDEPENDENT WEB BROWSERS APPLIED TO TEXT AND IMAGE PROCESSING

Branislava Šandrih, Vladimir Filipović, Saša Malkov and Aleksandar Kartelj

Abstract
Distributed computing implies presence of unused software resources available on multiple computers that work as a single system. This kind of computing uses a system with parallel architecture and varying node reliability. As a consequence, an adequate programming paradigm has to be used. Web application, described in this paper, is designed with such paradigm in mind. It is developed using popular technologies. Proposed approach can attract two types of users: ones that need additional computing resources (in further text seekers) and ones that are willing to contribute by putting their computing resources on disposal (in further text helpers). Seeker is obligated to share their data which is then divided into equal segments. Number of these equal segments is defined by seeker in advance. Secondly, seeker has to define processing procedure, i.e. code for processing these segments separately. Eventually, they should define the way how processed segments are reduced into final result. Described programming paradigm is known as MapReduce. Data can be in arbitrary format (at the moment, the system is evaluated for text and images) as long as the map-function handles it in the appropriate way. Helper is assigned a segment of the input data. Map-function, defined by the seeker, is then executed within helper’s Web browser and its result is being returned to the system when processing procedure finished. The Web application’s efficiency depends on the number and configuration of computing nodes. Four different use-cases are demonstrated in this paper: 1) word counting in file containing text, 2) finding the largest number in the text file that contains numbers, 3) sharpening of the corrupted image and 4) applying blur effect on the image file. Since its simplicity and universality, the system has potential for other more complex computations and could, in the future, be applied in the domain of distributed content digitalization, analysis of the data obtained from telescopes etc.

ACADEMIC RANKING OF WORLD UNIVERSITIES 2017

Gyula Mester

Abstract
In this paper the Academic Ranking of World Universities is considered. The publication of the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017, ARWU 2017 is analyzed. From 2017, those universities ranked between 501 and 800 are also published as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates. The ARWU 2017 ranking of the University of Belgrade is illustrated. The ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities.
